“You want $XXX for THAT?!?!”
Here’s a little about the price an original piece of art.
The price of art, like anything else, is based on many factors. The difference in the price an original oil painting is, that it can never be reproduced.
Sure, you can, ‘just paint another one’, but no two will be exactly alike.
So, when you purchase an original piece, you have the only one in the world!
The rarity of an object, should and does, increase it’s value.
Just consider any, one of a kind item.
The Mona Lisa, The Hope Diamond and others are priceless.
I’m not saying that ANY of my paintings (now or later) will be worth anything close to the value of those items.
But they are, one of a kind. Which brings me back to pricing.
A rule of thumb is to charge $2.00 a square inch.
Hummm, that doesn’t sound like much.
But when you calculate it, that’s $640 a painting.
(Most of my paintings are 16” x 20” which is 320 square inches. So, $2.00 a square in is $640.)
However.
I believe a person should pay, based on what the painting means to them--up to, or over the asking price.
If you see a painting and go away, but your mind keeps coming back to it, then it’s for you and you should buy it.
If you go away and it’s forgotten,
other factors were influencing you and you never really wanted it to begin with.
I hope this helps!
